The principle of the total chromium online monitor is mainly based on spectrophotometry. Under acidic conditions, various valence states of chromium in the water sample (including trivalent and hexavalent chromium) are first uniformly oxidized to hexavalent chromium by oxidizing agents (such as potassium permanganate or potassium persulfate). Subsequently, hexavalent chromium complexes with specific chromogenic agents (such as diphenylcarbodhydrazine), forming a colored complex. The color depth of this complex is proportional to the total chromium content in the water sample. By measuring the absorbance of the complex at a specific wavelength and using the linear relationship between absorbance and total chromium content, the instrument can accurately calculate the total chromium concentration in the water sample. The entire process is highly automated, enabling continuous, real-time monitoring of water quality.
